Subscription or course purchase needed
In this course, you’ll learn everything you need to know to create and maintain your own blog using WordPress. The contents of this course include:
Intro to WordPress
This chapter is an introduction to WordPress overall, including why and how you might install it yourself. We’ll also look at some software that can be helpful when working with any web application (including, of course, WordPress).
Installing WordPress Yourself
WordPress is relatively easy to install as web applications go. This chapter covers everything you need to know to carry out the installation, from locating and downloading the software through preparing to install and actually running the installer. For potential professional WordPress developers and themers, installing WordPress on your own computer is also covered.
This chapter covers the small amount of initial configuration that you need to do following a successful installation. We’ll look at the administrative dashboard, as well as the Settings section and a few simple tweaks that can enhance the security of your installation.
Writing and Managing Content
This chapter covers what WordPress is ultimately really about: writing and posting content. We’ll look at posts, pages, menus and navigation, categories and tags, images and other media, comments, and links.
Theming and Visual Design
This chapter looks at making WordPress your own through theming, which enables you to customize the look and feel of your site. WordPress has hundreds of themes available for free, and we’ll cover where to find them and how to install them and customize them through widgets and child themes.
Customizing Your Site with Plugins
While WordPress includes a lot of functionality out of the proverbial box, there are some aspects you will want to customize or add on via plugins. This chapter looks at the world of plugins, including how to find and install the free ones from wordpress.org, and shows examples of many useful types of plugins.
This chapter looks at the grunt work of making sure your WordPress is backed up and kept up to date. It’s not glamorous, but it is vital. We'll also look at the more advanced topic of upgrading an older WordPress installation.
Find Out More
Having gone through this course, you will feel confident in working with WordPress daily, but there is always more to learn. This chapter looks at some resources, both online and in real life, for seeking out help. The notion of WordPress as a community, and of giving back to that community, is also introduced.
The lessons are wrapped in a feature-rich interface that lets you jump to any topic and bookmark individual sections for later review. Full-Screen mode provides a hi-def, immersive experience, and Watch-and-Work mode shrinks the video into a small window so you can play the videos alongside your application. Also included are exercise files that give you an easy way to try out the techniques you learn and a 48-page guide containing supplemental material.
It's easy to watch this course from your Android device, iPad, or iPhone (4 or later). Access videos straight from your browser, or, for Android devices or iPads, use this course in one of our free apps.
Project files are included with this course so you can practice what you learn and work right along with the videos.
This course features video2brain’s interactive interface. As you navigate the course, rolling over a chapter or video brings up text describing that item.
Full-Screen mode provides a hi-def, immersive experience. And Watch-and-Work mode puts the video into a resizable window that you can shrink so you can watch the lessons on one side of your screen while you’re following along and applying what you’ve learned on the other.
This course comes in crisp 1280 x 720 high definition video.
Available in the downloadable version of our courses, this feature makes it easy to create a custom bookmark in any lesson to mark where you left off or to make note of something you want to refer back to later. You can even add a name or short note to remind yourself what the bookmark is for.
This course is accompanied by a full-color booklet that provides supplemental material to enhance the video training. (Downloadable PDF booklet for on-demand courses, print booklet when purchased at retail.)
