WordPress is an extremely popular web content management system (CMS). Free and open source, WordPress began as a blogging tool but is now used to build many kinds of sites, from personal portfolios to Fortune 500 blogs to the full-service websites of all types of businesses, nonprofits, and universities. With WordPress, users can change the look of a site using prebuilt or custom themes and add features and functionality – such as mobile device detection and adaptation – with plugins.
There are two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com is the hosted version, with a large selection of non-customizable plugins, widgets, and themes available. The self-hosted version, WordPress.org, offers full control over the branding and functionality of a site.
